I woke up late, after a long night, to shocking news. David Bowie gone. I don’t know if I can react immediately. He was a fearsome talent, and the loss to Music and Culture from his passing is inestimable. In and out of our lives, always challenging and innovative, and … shocking. I was once relayed a message that he had my number saved on his phone, he called asking for me .. where was I ? I was out far, declining to invade his privacy.We loved him .

Death in June

Yet more sad and shocking news! David Bowie was of great strength and inspiration to me during the ‘nothing’ years of the early ’70s back in South London’s suburbia whilst l wondered what to do with My Life, until Punk eventually came along to show me and some others the way.
Even though I was aware of 1969’s ‘Space Oddity’ hit it was the ‘Ziggy Stardust…’ album playing in the 6th form unit on our last day at school in 1972 (there’s that year again!) along with the Who’s ‘Live At Leeds’ that got me hooked onto everything he did from there on and before.
I bought ‘Black Star’ on the actual day of release a few days ago and played it that night in bed pondering its worth. Now I know its worth.

Due o tre anni fa mi trovavo in un ristorante di Londra a cena con un gruppo di persone con cui stava iniziando una bella amicizia e collaborazione che poi ha dato frutti a cui sono molto legato. Era abbastanza tardi quando guardo fuori dalla vetrata e noto David Bowie attraversare la strada.
David Bowie! Lui cammina e punta addirittura verso il ristorante. Dico agli altri: hey c’è David Bowie lì fuori, ma non mi filano più di tanto. Era tardi, c’eravamo solo noi ed un altro tavolo con una coppia nel locale. Bowie entra nel ristorante con i suoi pantaloni bianchi e viene verso di noi.
Come la scia di una cometa attraversa tutta la sala ed arriva davanti al nostro tavolo.
Ho il boccone in gola. Saluta e abbraccia due persone al mio tavolo e ridono. Ridono un bel po’.
Uno di loro ci presenta, lui mi da la mano con una gentilezza unica, io resto di sasso, mi alzo in piedi e con tutta la goffaggine possibile faccio cadere la sedia, il tovagliolo e le posate. Beve qualcosa con noi e poi vedo di nuovo quella scia lasciata dai pantaloni bianchi sparire nel buio della sera.
Il primo 7″ che comprai nella mia vita fu Heroes, era appena uscito, era il 1977. Io avevo 11 anni e mia madre mi diede i soldi per acquistarlo in un negozio di ottica che vendeva anche i 45 giri. Quella rimane una delle canzoni più belle che conosca.
Il lato B del singolo era V-2 Schneider e mi ha dato il tormento per anni apparendo in vari modi dentro la mia musica.
Sabato volevo uscire per acquistare Blackstar, poi ho fatto tardi per arrivare al negozio di dischi.
Ci son tornato stamattina, con la copia di Blackstar in mano, un po’ perso nel vuoto mentre qualcuno ha messo su Heroes.

So much will be written over the coming months, decades, there’s little, if anything, to add. I’ll keep it brief. I was speaking with a friend recently about how, particularly those who grew out of the US punk era, created a classic album with their debut and how difficult that must be to live with but, to have created one classic album in a lifetime is more than enough. Bowie did much more than that. He changed the entire landscape of popular music and beyond. Who else managed to do that since the Beatles? Whom else since? Now that he was beyond any level of criticism it was as if he was about to throw caution to the wind and reach new levels of experimentation in his work. (I’m no expert. I’ve not heard a Bowie album in decades. No chastisement please, no recommendations). This is a significant loss. But Bowie’s status as legend is signed and sealed. At home with the stars, literally, metaphorically. My first thoughts were of David Jones the father and the loss this must be to his young family. Heart goes out to them. peace.
