Doveva esserci qualche cosa di strano nell’aria di Manchester della fine degli anni ’70.
Un qualcosa che sapeva di grigio e di cemento.
Il grigio di periferie dimenticate, anonime.
Ed in quelle periferie nascevano desideri e si consumavano sogni di evasione.
La storia era quella comune ai tempi e forse uguale anche oggi.
Sempre uguale a se stessa come un percorso ciclico che si rinnova ad ogni e per ogni generazione.
Quattro ragazzi che si conoscono forse per caso o forse no.
Forse fu il destino, una mano invisibile a unirli.
Quattro storie di ragazzi che alchemicamente si uniscono e creano una miscela deflagrante.
Un gruppo destinato a restare nella storia perché furono loro l’inizio della Storia.
Il sound era inclassificabile per i tempi. La rabbia del punk veniva interiorizzata ma superata.
Ormai non si trattava più di rabbia ma di irriverenza, di protesta, ma di una protesta non sociale ma esistenziale.
Un grido strozzato e inascoltabile. Ed inaccettabile.
Un giornalista che li vide dal vivo disse che dopo averli ascoltati “veniva voglia di sputare in faccia a Dio”.
Si, perché la loro proposta era oltre il malessere quotidiano ma scavava a fondo, nei fondamenti della vita e nei suoi meccanismi quotidiani.
Mostrava senza paure l’assurdità del vivere (“Atrocity Exhibition”), la voglia di superare i confini fisici della città (“Interzone”), di avventurarsi verso terre inesplorate (“Wilderness”), la dicotomia tra l’essere e il non essere di heidgerriana memoria (“Heart and Soul”), la voglia di infinito (“The Eternal”) che naufraga nell’incomunicabilità totale (“Isolation”). Denunciava la noia di serate anonime (“Shadowplay”), trascorse ad inseguire altezze infinite ascoltando la radio (“Transmission”) o leggendo racconti di Kafka (“Colony”). Sempre alla ricerca di uno scopo (“A Means To An End”) che desse senso alla paura dell’ignoto (“Passover”) che sfumava ad ogni alba (“New Dawn Fades”).
Tra i ricordi dell’infanzia (“Insight”), i drammi della storia (“Leaders of Men”) e la necessità contingente di non sciogliere dei legami (“These Days”).
Il tutto si consumò in fretta, in pochi anni.
Ed il presente di allora divenne subito leggenda e la leggenda mito.
Quel mito che diventa un paesaggio nebbioso man mano che passa il tempo e che si consuma tra l’umidità di un addio (“Atmosphere”), tra viali alberati in cui confessare l’amore totale (“Love Will Tear Us Apart“) e la dedizione eterna (“Ceremony”).
Un sacrificio consumato per raggiungere quell’altrove e quella saggezza che non a tutti è permesso di “vedere”.
Lui vide e passò oltre.
Era la notte tra il 17 ed il 18 maggio del 1980.
Un bicchiere di whisky, “Idiot” di Iggy Pop ed un film di Herzog come cornice all’afasia dello spirito.
“Muore giovane chi è caro agli Dei” dice un vecchio adagio. Ed a noi resta un messaggio, una testimonianza.
Dopo di allora niente fu più lo stesso. Per nessuno.
