E’ davvero strano sentire in una forma quasi classica e minimalista canzoni come O’ Brother Sleep o Amok.
Niente più elettronica oscura con il tocco unico che conosciamo bene come marchio di fabbrica, anche le vocals si sono fatte quasi più “eteree” e da cantautore (solo Butterfly: Dance! conserva il tipico tocco “Diary of Dreams style“, con quella voce profonda e cupa, mesta, riconoscibile fin dal primo ascolto).
Giftraum ha perso totalmente tutta la verve che la caratterizzava, qui suona “spompata”.
Anche Malice è totalmente acustica, tanto da sembrare una ballata…. Rumours about Angels sembra quasi un’altra canzone! Qui il cantato è una sorta di “rap” (!) serrato e qualche volta effettato.
Conclusione?
In casi come questi, quando vengono coverizzate, remixate, “liftingate” canzoni “intoccabili”, l’unica cosa che si può fare è approcciarsi con cautela (pensate a come ci arrabbiamo se a fare cover sono personaggi che rovinano l’originale con idee strampalate!).
Certo, dal punto di vista qualitativo ci troviamo di fronte a un cd ben suonato, atmosfere sonore ben create, tutto sommato “godibili”, ottima registrazione e via dicendo… ma la domanda è una sola: chi ama Amok, O’ Brother Sleep, Malice o Giftraum in versione classica (ovvero, come furono composte anni orsono…) non so quanto possa apprezzarle “liftingate” in versione pianistica, acustica o classicheggiante.
Questo cd lascia spiazzati.
Da maneggiare con cautela, quindi, magari cercando di apprezzarlo per quello che -secondo me- è: un “intermezzo”, un esperimento…
Certo, ogni Artista ha diritto di fare quello che vuole con la sua musica e le sue canzoni…farle, rifarle, stravolgerle all’inverosimile, ammesso che poi se ne assuma le conseguenze.
A mio parere non è affatto accostabile con quello che trovammo in Nigredo o Freak Perfume, o per esteso, con tutto quello che ci ha proposto -e che abbiamo imparato a conoscere così bene e ad aspettarci- il Diario dei Sogni…
Certo, posso capire che dopo così tanti anni di carriera si abbia la necessità di ampliare gli orizzonti, evolversi, progredire… ma non si può avere la pretesa che i fans sappiano accettare tutto senza battere ciglio.
Secondo me è un passo falso, e verrà “rinnegato” dallo stesso Artista, magari tra qualche anno.
Ma la storia non si fa con i se, ripeto, questo cd qualitativamente è ottimo, i suoni sono limpidi e cristallini, le atmosfere non hanno comunque perso il tocco doloroso o di pathos che le caratterizza (si senta anche la nuova versione di She and Her Darkness) l’unica cosa “che sembra strana” è che ci si veda il logo Diary of Dreams stampato sopra…e che si sia andati a toccare i vecchi classici riproponendoli in questo modo, senza più nessuna soffusa carezza elettronica.
Forse, avrebbe avuto più senso fare uscire un mini cd con nuove canzoni appositamente create in questa veste acustica/classica, o magari, creare un side project con cui “sfogare” certe tendenze (pensate a quanti progetti impegnano Chris Pohl, e a quante personalità artistiche ora “romantiche” ora “Harsh” sfoga in questo o quel progetto stando ben attento a non travalicare i confini tra una band e l’altra…).
Ripeto, ottimo cd dal punto di vista compositivo, (non si sta discutendo di certo di questo) ma, secondo me, potrebbe rappresentare un “boccone indigesto”, almeno per i fans più tradizionalisti.
Il rischio, più che di una mancanza di copie vendute di questo The Anatomy of Silence ( una cosa che ultimamente preoccupa tutti gli Artisti…) , mi pare che sia il “si…però dai, ora rimetto Nigredo…”.
